The science behind PCM

From NASA to organizations worldwide

  • From scientific research to daily practice
  • Recognize and predict behavior and stress patterns
  • Applied from NASA to organizations worldwide

Imagine if communication differences were a source of strength, not stress. That you understand what lies beneath behavior and know how to adapt to it.

The Process Communication Model® is an internationally validated model that helps you recognize and leverage communication differences. You learn what you need to function optimally and how to bring out the best in yourself and others.

The science of effective communication

American clinical psychologist Dr. Taibi Kahler is the founder of the Process Communication Model®. As a researcher in Transactional Analysis, he identified predictable stress patterns in human behavior and the conditions we need to thrive. He also discovered six personality types that are present in all of us. These insights help us predict our own and others' behavior, prevent miscommunication, and ultimately make a positive impact.

From groundbreaking to global success

PCM was launched in the 1970s, when Dr. Taibi Kahler applied the groundbreaking insights from his personality research to help NASA. NASA's psychiatrist asked Kahler to help select the best astronaut teams for space missions – and that selection proved successful. In 1982, Kahler validated the underlying questionnaire and developed it further into the Process Communication Model®. The core of his approach: do not pigeonhole people, but recognize, respect, and utilize their differences.

Today, Kahler is the honorary chairman of Kahler Communications Inc., the organization that manages and further develops the Process Communication Model® worldwide. The model is now applied in 60 countries by organizations such as Pixar, IKEA, LVMH, Adobe, L'Oréal, and Michelin for leadership and team development — and by teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals in their daily practice.

Globally, over 6,200 trainers and coaches are now certified in PCM. More than 1.8 million people already use the model's practical tools to make a daily difference in communication and collaboration.
