Personality is not about animal names, idols, colors, or which planet you come from. It is an essential part of neurodiversity and concerns individual differences in the way people perceive and communicate.

Imagine you ask the leaders in your organization; how would they answer these questions?

Have you ever...

  • taken a personality test and felt that the results pigeonholed you?
  • in a training on personality differences, received a certain label or stereotype?
  • ever experienced people hiding behind their personality?
  • Have you experienced trust issues with certain people?
  • have you ever surprisingly discovered that someone didn't trust you?
  • hearing people talk about valuing all personality types, while their communication or leadership style doesn't reflect this?

When we talk about personality, we often see references to a certain type of person, with phrases like: “I am a _________” or “My boss is a _________”. This kind of labeling is not supported by personality science. It's simply not how personality works. Human behavior is more complex than that.

Consider the following. Are people in your organization encouraged and trained to change their behavior to communicate with different personality types? Or do they hide behind labels and their 'personality'?

Changing your mindset about personality can make a difference. This is the second of eight mindset shifts that can transform the impact of leaders.

Leadership Mindset Shift #2: Personality is about types WITHIN people, not types OF people

Unlike other personality models, the Process Communication Model recognizes this. PCM is a behavioral model with several specific characteristics:

  • Process Communication Model measures the relative strength of six personality types that we all have WITHIN us. No pigeonholing, no overly simplified labels.
  • Process Communication Model shows how each type experiences and processes the world around them, how each type prefers to communicate, and how that type is motivated. It also reveals how each type sabotages itself with negative attention.
  • Best of all, PCM teaches you specific leadership communication strategies that allow you to stimulate and leverage the unique strengths of each type.

Six types, six ways to shine

These are the six personality types we all have within us, along with their corresponding character strengths and what they excel at.

The responsibility of a leader: managing personality

Leaders must deliver results to their organizations: achieving common goals with the involvement of diverse teams. Additionally, leaders are increasingly held responsible for fostering an environment where everyone feels heard, valued, engaged, and motivated. PCM helps leaders in both cases.

If people are an organization's greatest asset, then it's crucial to effectively leverage their personalities. Leaders must therefore:

  • Recognize and appreciate all six types within oneself.
  • Recognize and appreciate all six types in others.
  • To confront their own biases, prejudices, and discrimination related to personality.
  • Align policies and actions with the inclusion of personality.
  • Learn effective communication and leadership strategies to support the success of all personality types.

Change your mindset to become a better leader

In the PCM Leadership Program, leaders learn how to recognize, appreciate, and utilize all six personality types in the workplace. They can then:

  • expand and better utilize the skills within their teams;
  • prevent burnouts and reduce staff turnover;
  • building a more inclusive work environment.
